New Mayport ship officially joining the fleet

Jacksonville, FL — The Navy’s newest Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer will be commissioned this weekend, ahead of her eventual homeporting at Naval Station Mayport.

The future USS Paul Ignatius is named to honor Paul Robert Ignatius, who served in the Navy during World War II, and later as Assistant Secretary of Defense and then Secretary of the Navy.

The ship will be the 67th Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, when she’s commissioned Saturday in Fort Lauderdale. Naval Station Mayport says there is no set time yet for when she will arrive at her new home.
