Barry was arrested for verbal assault on his neighbor and was detained for two days in jail.
Police video showed Barry, a heart transplant patient, explaining to the arresting officer multiple times that he needed to take his anti-rejection medication every day in order to survive.
Three days after he was released on bond, he died at the hospital.
“The real problem here is that a lot of people who are arrested have medical conditions, and if they are not accurately managed, then of course there can be a negative outcome as happened here,” said former FBI agent Dale Carson.

This is one of the cases that prompted the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office to drop the jail’s medical provider
Armor Correctional Healthcare was the former medical provider at the jail when Barry was in custody back in 2022.
They were dropped in 2023.

Now, with a new provider, city officials tell Action News Jax the focus remains on ensuring proper healthcare services for inmates.
The attorney for the Barry family declined to comment on this settlement.
