JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Mayor Donna Deegan announced Percy Golden II as the new chief of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department on Monday, following the retirement of longtime Chief Keith Powers.

Golden, who has served within the department for 21 years, becomes the third African-American fire chief in the city’s history and the first since Charles Moreland in 2011.

He will take over as acting chief beginning Friday, pending formal confirmation by the Jacksonville City Council later this summer.

The selection follows a competitive search process that began with 29 applicants, 12 of whom were ineligible. That left 17 applicants, which were narrowed down to five finalists.

Deegan cited Golden’s dedication to Jacksonville and deep understanding of the department as key factors in her decision.

“Percy Golden has demonstrated unwavering commitment to this city,” Deegan said. “His experience, leadership, and community roots make him the right choice to lead JFRD into the future.”

Golden said the appointment is a deeply personal milestone. Firefighting runs in his family—his father and brother have both served in the department.

“This is major for our family,” Golden said. “I’m following in my dad’s footsteps, as well as my brother’s, who is also in the fire department. Being around the department family, seeing the camaraderie and relationships over the years—it just drew me in. We love this department, we love this city, and we just want to serve.”

Golden succeeds Keith Powers, who retired after 29 years with JFRD, including six as chief.

Along with Golden’s appointment, Jacob Blanton has been named Deputy Director of Fire Chief. Both appointments are subject to City Council confirmation later this summer.

Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters issued the following statement about Golden’s appointment:

“I congratulate Chief Golden on his appointment by Mayor Deegan as the new leader of Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. JSO and JFRD have long enjoyed a close working partnership, and I look forward to broadening our agencies’ collaboration in the future so that, together, we can better serve Jacksonville’s citizens.

“I am incredibly grateful for my friend Chief Keith Powers and the contributions he has made to public safety in our city during his tenure. I wish him the very best in his retirement.

“I am excited for the future of JFRD under the leadership of Chief Percy Golden Jr. His dedication to public service, our city, and collaboration with agencies like ours makes him a stellar choice for this important role.

“JFRD will continue to be in good hands. Congratulations to both Chief Powers and Chief Golden.”
