New intersection of First Coast Expressway opens

Jacksonville, FL — The First Coast Expressway is on the path to completion.

On Thursday, September 13th, a new interchange of SR-23 at the I-10 split opened. This new roadway connects SR-23 to Beaver St and I-10.

The entire First Coast Expressway project, once complete, will cover 46 miles of limited-access roadway. The Expressway will eventually continue all the way down into Clay County to SR-21/Blanding Blvd. For now, it merges into Discovery Drive shortly after Oakleaf Plantation Pkwy.

"It's a direct connection between I-10 and I-95. It's going to, for all of our families, for all our tourists for all of our visitors, be a quicker more efficient path. Also, hopefully, knock on wood, we'll never have a hurricane again... but it will give us a better evacuation route," says Florida Governor Rick Scott.

The SunPass toll program has yet to be in effect on the First Coast Expressway.

The First Coast Expressway will be the first toll lanes in Northeast Florida since 1989 and more are to come in other parts of the area.
